Glass Balustrades & Railings

Senhong glass offers glass balustrades and glass railings in Shandong, China.

Glass balustrades, also known as fall prevention glazing, are glass structures used in place of traditional banisters or balustrades to prevent falls, meeting all required building codes. These systems provide unobstructed views while ensuring safety and are suitable for various applications, from balustrade infills to full-height room dividers. To ensure safety, many countries require dynamic stress testing, such as the pendulum-impact test. Leading manufacturers, like Senhong Glass in China, specialize in high-quality tempered glass railings.

Designing for safety and efficiency

Since dynamic stress tests can be complex, it is recommended to design structures based on established, tested constructions to simplify the process and minimize the need for further testing. Fall prevention glazing is typically categorized into three types.

Full-height fixed glazing

This involves fixed, full-height glass panels without openable sashes, handrails, or protruding rails that support horizontal loads.

  • Mounting: Full-height glazing is most structurally effective with linear mounts on all four sides. If linear mounting on all sides is not possible, free edges must be protected from impact by adjacent glass panes or architectural elements like walls.
  • Considerations: Panels mounted only on two sides will flex significantly more upon impact. Therefore, the glass must be sufficiently inset into the holder to prevent it from slipping out. For point mounting, clamp plates must have a diameter of at least 50mm.

Bearing glass balustrades

These balustrades have a linear clamping mount at the bottom edge.

  • Protection: The top edge should be protected from impact, either with an adhesively applied fitting or a continuous mounted handrail. A robust, continuous handrail is crucial for transferring horizontal loads to adjacent panels if one pane fails.
  • Glass type: The appropriate glass for this category is laminated safety glass (LSG), which may be made from heat-strengthened glass (HSG) or tempered safety glass (TSG).

Infill balustrade glass

In this application, the glass serves as an infill within a facade or between banister posts, with horizontal loads supported by a handrail or crossbar.

  • Mounting: The glazing is secured with either point or linear mounts on at least two opposite sides.
  • Glass type: Laminated safety glass (LSG) or tempered safety glass (TSG) is recommended.
